Explore the historical city center on foot
Madrid is one of those cities that can be explored on foot. Most of the city's main landmarks and monuments are located in the city center, and many of the city's most famous tapas bars can be found by exploring the nearby streets. The main street located in the city center is the Gran Via, a wide street filled with bars, affordable hotels and hostels, restaurants, shops and terraces with views towards the city.
A short walk away from this street visitors will find the center itself, the Puerta de Sol square. This square is a popular meeting spot and is within walking distance of the Plaza Mayor Square, a large square known for the many balconies facing it and the markets where visitors will be able to buy handcrafted products.

Tour the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral
After exploring the city's main squares visitors can follow Arenal street down to the Plaza de Oriente. This square, decorated with fountains and statues, is where the Palacio de Oriente, the city's Royal Palace, is located. Guided tours are organized around forty of the palace's more than two thousand rooms, which are filled with antiques and paintings by Goya, Velazquez and other artists. Next to the palace is Madrid's most famous cathedral, the Almudena Cathedral, which has several chapels and a 20m dome.
Spend an afternoon in the art museums
Madrid is a city known for its many museums. The city's main art museums are the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia Museum and the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum, which form the Golden Triangle of Museums area located steps away from the Retiro Park and the Atocha central train station. Audio and guided tours are organized around each one of the museums' permanent art collections.
Visit the city's parks.
After visiting the city's main landmarks visitors will be able to spend an afternoon in one of the city's many parks. The main park is the Retiro park, located near the city's main art museums. In the center of the park there is pond where boats can be rented. There are several smaller ponds with waterfalls filled with ducks. West of the city center is the Casa de Campo park, an ancient royal hunting estate that has been transformed into a park with several lakes, a theme park and a zoo.
