MACAU ATTRACTIONS: A-Ma Cultural Village

this is part of my
MACAU ATTRACTIONS SERIES
_____________________________

A-Ma Cultural Village is a 7,000 square meter complex of towers, temple palaces, museums and shops.

The complex is composed of a village like atmosphere, with a bell tower, drum tower, carved marble altar in the Tian-Hou Palace, a dressing hall, museum and shops.

This relatively modern classic complex is designed to attract A-Ma devotees and tourists, especially those from the Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Fujian Province, where the goddess A-Ma is venerated for the past 1,000 years ago.

The entrance at the bottom of the hill is impressive. It depicts the artwork, carving and workmanship of the village on top of the hill.

When you reach the top of the hill, you will approach the village through a series of stairs carved with auspicious Chinese motifs including the roaring tiger, the double lion, the five cranes and double phoenix until the main gate of the Tian Hou Palace.

Further up the hill is the statue of the goddess A-ma. The white marble statue is 19.99 meters high to physically symbolize the year of the handover. It was designed in Macau but carved in China. A-ma is the indigenous goddess of the sea who is said to protect fishermen and sailors.

The spacious hilltop base of the statue gives a 360 view of Coloane, Hacsa Beach and Cotai. Macau peninsula can be seen on a clear day.

We went here in the afternoon of February 4, 2011 with our friend Ro Anne who works in Macau. We took the bus 25 from the City of Dreams Macau which is located in Cotai Strip. A-Ma cultural village is in the same island (Taipa). The shuttle will take you to the base of the hill where the temple is located. From there, you will have to transfer to another free shuttle which will take you up the hill and into the temple. Shuttle buses regularly come and go so we didn't experience any difficulty waiting. Entrance is also free.

This was the pit stop of leg 7 of Amazing Race Asia Season 3.

Opening hours of Tian Hou Palace: 08:00 to 18:00 daily.
