HOKIEN MEE at Red Garden Food Paradise Penang

"To visit Penang and not sample her gastronomic wonders is simply scandalous" --states one of the guidebooks I acquired through Tourism Malaysia.Penang is considered as one of Asia's Food Paradise. And we tried hard to sample as many food as we could in our less than 24-hour stay.

HOKIEN MEE was one of the things we tried at Red Garden Food Paradise and Night Market along Leith Street.

"For a bowl of comfort and hearty goodness,Hokkien Mee or Prawn Mee as it is known outside Penang, makes a perfect meal anytime,be it breakfast, lunch, dinner or supper. The dish of yellow noodles and rice vermicelli drenched in a thick spicy broth made of both prawns and pork is served with a garnish of water spinach (kangkung) and crunchy bean sprouts.

The Hokkien Mee is finished off with a few slices of lean pork, boiled egg, prawns and a sprinkle of fragrant fried shallots. To add more depth to the already hot bowl of Hokkien Mee,a healthy spoonful of fried chili paste is served along with the dish. What makes this dish interesting is that it's spicy, strong prawn flavour actually lends a slight sweetness to the deliciously fragrant bowl of Hokkien Mee.Some stalls offer extra toppings such as pork ribs, mantis prawn, fish balls, entrails, pork sausage and roast pork at additional charge. This is a non-halal dish."

It's funny coz I was just pointing at the guidebook all along but I was unsuspecting it's similar to the one we ordered in Jalan Alor back in KL.Actually, they are exactly the same.Hokkien Mee is otherwise called Prawn Mee.My wife instantly recognized the spicy taste and the yellow noodles.I say, they taste exactly the same, the one in KL and this one in Penang. But my wife loooooves noodles so she enjoyed one big serving of it. :)
