TUNE HOTEL Ortigas Pasig: Budget Hotel at the heart of Ortigas Business District

I frequent this hotel and I am saying it just now. I wrote about Tune Ermita a few years back, a budget hotel in a district close to key historical spots in the old city of Manila, makes sense. Perfect for backpackers and budget traveler who are usually known for their savvy-ness for culture and history. And then they opened a branch in Ortigas Center, a major CBD in the Philippines, and at first I was like ,what is a budget hotel doing in a prime business district? Eyebrows raised.

Then it made sense to me. Prior to Tune's arrival, an overnight stay in the area would cost 3,000php up. If you are like me who is only an hour away East in Rizal staying in a three-star hotel at that price would be too much if your only goal is to have a decent place to stay if you feel like not going home. Most patrons here I noticed are locals, families mostly. I started seeing a few Asians too but not so many whites.

Just Pay for What You Need
(Choose your add-ons)
The brand is very familiar to me and that brings comfort each time. Tune hotels is one of the pioneers in Asia when it comes to add-ons. In short, you can choose to just pay for the room, and just tick on the add ons you want or need. You have your own towel and toiletries? You can opt not to avail and pay for it. You don't need to watch tv? Then let go of it as well. And if you are okay with no airconditioner of just a few hours of it, you can personalize it as well. The whole concept is very similar to how budget airlines operate. You don't have to avail of the things you don't need. Tune Hotels after all is the sister company of AirAsia.

To describe it as a decent budget hotel is no justice. Think of 5-star bed, a power shower (hot and cold) , cable tv, modern interior for roughly 1,500 pesos and you can hardly find such a deal. And a room less all the add-ons you can have for around 900 pesos. How is that? Try some cheap motels nearby and you will find yourself paying the same amount of even more for a 24-hour stay in a shitty place. Just saying.

Book Online for Cheaper Rates
TIP: It i usually cheaper if you book online. Check their rates on Agoda.com to get a good deal. One time, I walked in to check and they offered me 2,200 pesos for the cheapest rate. I knew prior to going there that the online offer was only 1,500++ so I logged in their website and made booking online then and there and just presented the confirmation number to the front desk assistant. Clever.

Room Types :

Location
(Near MRT)
What I like about the location is that it is along Shaw Blvd. Shaw is home to some interesting stores. It is only a 5-minute walk from MRT-Shaw Station.

Shopping and Dining
While Ortigas Pasig is not known for historical sites, it is a bustling CBD with lots of choices for food and shopping. It is very near Shangrila Mall, SM Megamall and Podium. What I also like is the back entrance/exit which leads you to the quieter side of Ortigas in the area of UAAP and Tektite.

--10 minutes walk from EDSA corner Shaw Boulevard
--600m to the Shangri-la Plaza Mall
--650m to the MRT (Shaw Boulevard Station)
--950m to the St. Francis Shopping Mall

The inner streets here are home to some nice restaurants including Korean restos owned and operated by Korean Nationals who live in the area.My favorite is Jang Ga Nae which is in the same street with Astoria Plaza. Read: JANG GA NAE Korean restaurant and the late CHRISTMAS exchange gift.If you are into karinderya-stye dining, there are a few in the same lane which sells local dishes mostly serving office workers.

Night Life
Take a cab and heed to Kapitolyo for some nice tea shops. Next to it is Kapitolyo Village where you can find some interesting specialty restaurants.

Night Parties and Drinking? Ask the cab to take you to MetroWalk and you are in for a fun night. Drink in an outdoor setting with a band or inside cozy pubs. Meet locals. The crowd here is composed mostly of young professionals.

The rooms maybe a bit small for families but Tune Hotel definitely offers quality accommodations at competitive rates. The only place in the area that offers similar quality is Go Hotels which I also tried. It is a Philippine-based brand with the same business scheme. No wonder why I frequent Tune Hotel Ortigas. I am comfortable with this brand and I am very happy with the value-for-money it offers.
